Queensland councils collected an estimated 5.92 million tonnes of household waste in 2024–25, of which approximately 4.33 million tonnes was disposed to landfill. Councils are responsible for planning and managing household waste collection, either directly or through contracted service providers. They are also responsible for managing landfill operations and associated longterm environmental and financial liabilities, including landfill closure and capping costs.

In this audit, we will assess whether selected local governments are efficiently and effectively managing household waste collection and landfill activities. This may also include how they plan and budget for landfill closure and capping costs.
