Local governments (councils) play a critical role in the viability and vibrancy of local communities. It is important for state and local governments to work together to leverage opportunities for councils and address the sustainability challenges they face. 

The Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers introduced a local government sustainability framework that forms the basis of how the department engages with councils to support their sustainability.
